Summer 2021 Student Newsletter

Welcome to CCI-LEX Student News!

Welcome to CCI-LEX Student News

We are excited to share the very first edition of CCI-LEX Student News!

We hope you will enjoy reading 4-5 newsletters a year from us.  We want to share news and pictures from CCI-LEX,  introduce you to interesting community groups, and share resources for studying English.  Of course, we will also share stories about some of our great students – especially CCI-LEX alumni or graduates!

This is only our first newsletter, but we want to hear from you!  Do you have any ideas or suggestions for CCI-LEX Student News?  What kind of information or stories do you want to read?  Do you want to help us with the newsletter?  Let us know.

Thank you and happy reading!

My Success in Canada

Every year, CCI-LEX has a writing contest for students called “My Success in Canada.”  We ask students from all classes and levels to write about the goals and successes they found in their new life in Canada.  We are so proud of our students for their hard work in learning English! Thank you so much to everyone who shared their stories with us!

For this year’s contest, we recognized sixteen students with the best writing and stories.  Nine students received an honourable mention (second place), and seven students received first place recognition (winners).  This year, our top seven winners all came from different classes and different countries:

Faduma Abdi Musa is from Somalia and Ying Zhu is from China. They talk about their struggles communicating with others. They share how their hard work and improvement in English helped them accomplish their goals.

Marie Denise Refuse is from Haiti and Jesus Lopez Omana is from Mexico. They talk about their own success in Canada and also about the importance of their family and children’s success as well.

Fouzia Lachi comes from Algeria, Ganna Skliarenko comes from Ukraine, and Tomasz Latawiec comes from Poland. The three of them share different details about their daily life, their work in Canada, and the opportunities that learning English provided them.

These students also made videos to share their stories at our Annual General Meeting in front of CCI-LEX staff, teachers, donors, and friends.

You can read their full stories in the CCI-LEX Annual Report or, even better, watch the videos!

What are Community Leagues?

How can I connect with people in my community?

What is a “community?” You may think of your local church, mosque, sports team or neighbourhood.  A community is a group of people who share the same interests, goals, culture, or other things. Your neighbourhood is a community where you share the same area.

Did you know in Edmonton we have something called Community Leagues?  A Community League is a group of people who make opportunities for people in their neighborhood to meet and do different activities together. They usually have a community hall where they hold recreational activities, classes, meetings and more.  These activities are usually free or low-cost for community members. Community Leagues also help build pools, maintain skating rinks or manage fun events. There is probably a Community League in your neighbourhood!

If you need something in your neighbourhood, are looking for a sports team for your children or have a concern about neighbourhood safety you can connect with your local Community League.  It’s a great way to meet new people and make friends with people that live near you!

This fall, CCI-LEX will plan some visits to local Community Leagues to introduce students to the activities, services, and membership they offer.  Follow us on social media to stay up to date!
