Robert Bissoondatt, Teacher

Country: Canada

Robert is a biochemistry student at the University of Alberta. At the University, he explored different ways to get involved with the community in the Greater Edmonton area, and through the Premedical Students Association, he heard about CCI-LEX for the first time.

It took Robert a couple of months to decide about applying to volunteer at CCI-LEX, as although he has always enjoyed explaining things, he did not have any teaching experience. “I thought, well, let’s give it a shot”, and applied online.

The first few weeks, Robert was impressed by the friendly environment, and during his time observing classes, Tony -one of our more experienced volunteers- talked to him and convinced him of the amazing experience he would have at CCI-LEX. Everything seemed very professional, and he felt excited about the experience, so he decided to try his best and started as a High Beginner teacher.

It has been two years since Robert started; during this time, he has come to see how important it is to personally connect with his students. “I ask [the students] how they are doing, maybe they are doing well, or there is something stressing them at work. There is a lady in particular, she is still in my class, she works at Walmart and I used to work at Walmart, so I can kind of relate to the stressing of working in a retail setting […] But, sometimes, it is just as simple as giving someone your time and giving them the attention that they need”.

As for his favourite moments as a teacher, Robert loves to spend time with students to solve their questions. When students stay after class, he knows it is a special moment, a time to listen to them and tailor an explanation so the student can understand and have a better comprehension of the class.

As a teacher, Robert recognizes that students can be a little shy. “Sometimes students are hesitant to ask questions when everyone else is [in the classroom], because there is a bit of courage involved to say ‘oh, I don’t understand’. But, if somebody has a question, there is a good chance that someone else has the same one”. It looks like teacher Robert really wants to hear your questions!

We hope Robert continues to have fun at CCI-LEX, and that next year he graduates and celebrates a new chapter of his professional life!
