CCI-LEX In The Community

How Your Donation Helps

Fatima and her children came to Canada from Somalia as refugees.  She had never studied English before and was unable to read and write in her own language.  At CCI-LEX, Fatima found more than a place to learn English, she found a welcoming supportive community of fellow learners, staff, teachers, and volunteers. After some months of study, Fatima came to ask for a letter of attendance.  When she filled in the request form independently she shared a smile that lit up the office, and we celebrated.  CCI-LEX was the first school Fatima had ever attended, not just to learn English, but in her whole life.  This seemingly small action marked a huge step in her learning journey. At CCI-LEX, we celebrate many firsts with our learners: first school, first time to study English, first time to go ice skating, first job in Canada.  Will you consider making a monthly gift so that CCI-LEX can continue to celebrate more firsts with learners like Fatima?

Omoyemi’s Story

In her search to gain Board experience, Omoyemi Timson – or Yemi for short – was very intentional about her choice of non-profit. Having lived in a country where she didn’t speak the native language, Yemi has experienced first-hand the challenges faced by newcomers to Canada. In her own words, “being an adult trying to speak a language where everyone assumes you know what they are saying is really tough”. At CCI-LEX language is “a tool of empowerment”, and Yemi has fallen in love with an organization that has positively impacted so many individuals. She is in her fourth year on the Board, currently serving as its Vice‑President, and plans to stay on and support the school as best she can. She hopes her donations will help improve technology access and equity for students – especially with an increase in online learning as has become evident during the pandemic – as well as providing them with more personalized English language learning opportunities.

Why did you become a Club Lexicon member?

The vision and mission of CCI‑LEX resonates with me. I am happy to support an organization that changes and improves lives. Language has the power to open the doors to many opportunities, to boost internal confidence, and to build community.

Is there a significant moment, experience, or person in your life that moved you to make a difference in the world?

Much like a lot of the students attending CCI‑LEX, between 2006 and 2009 I lived in a country where I did not speak the native language. It was a hard adjustment, so I empathize with people who struggle to learn a new language and communicate.

What inspires you to be a community builder and volunteer?

The student stories at the Annual General Meeting really makes the impact of CCI‑LEX come alive. It highlights just how much being able to communicate in the regional language can change lives.

If you could change one thing in the world, country, or your community, what would that be? And how would you do it?

It would be making the world a kinder place where people are more empathetic to the struggles of others. I would do it through education and integration. As part of the program, folks will need to walk in the shoes of and live with others that are out of their social, economic, religious, political etc. cohort or bubble.

What is it that you value most about CCI-LEX?

That CCI‑LEX fully embodies its vision and mission of helping English language learners and promoting cultural exchange. These are not just words on a page, they are the heartbeat of the organization.
