Return to Classes in September and COVID-19 Updates

August 14, 2020 – Return to Classes in September; COVID-19 Updates

CCI-LEX is pleased to announce that it will be offering a variety of learning options for September for English language learners – both in person and online.  We are excited to welcome those who are ready back to the classroom, and to continue supporting others online.

The majority of classes will be blended, with students studying both here at CCI-LEX and online.  There will also be some classes delivered totally online, with the plan to offer even more later in the fall.

For those learners with Beginner levels of English, classes will return to fully in-person, and students will receive support to learn how to join online classes.  You can contact the school for information or visit the CCI and LEX Program sections on our website for more information.

It has been a summer of learning and growing with online classes for everyone at CCI-LEX – from staff, students, teachers, and volunteers – and we are more confident in the quality of classes we can offer online and know that we will continue to explore and improve our classes.

In addition, we have been very busy following city, provincial, and health authority guidelines, as well as trends in Edmonton, Alberta, and Canada, in order to plan and prepare for the safe return of students and teachers.

The following are just some of the measures we are taking to prepare for classes returning in September:

  • limited class sizes (maximum 6-7 students/class); maximum capacity posted in classrooms and common areas
  • physical distancing maintained in classrooms
  • masks mandatory when entering/exiting the school and when in common areas
  • masks may be removed in the classroom once classes begin and physical distancing is maintained (as per City of Edmonton bylaw, educational institutions are exempt from mandatory mask-wearing)
  • blended classes to reduce number of students at CCI-LEX each day and time slot
  • staggered break times
  • increased cleaning and sanitization, with additional attention to high touch items and areas
  • sanitizer stations in every classroom and school entrances
  • Plexiglas barriers for administrative staff and teachers
  • reducing amount of extra furniture and common touch, non-essential shared objects
  • daily health checks for all staff, volunteers, and students
  • tracking (contact tracing) of all persons on-site at CCI-LEX
  • posters of symptoms, cough etiquette, hand washing, etc.
  • orientation and regular reminders of expectations and best practices to keep all safe and healthy

We are committed to providing the safest environment possible as we bring more people back to CCI-LEX classrooms and are responsive and open to feedback.  We will adjust as necessary in order to best respond to the changing situation and stakeholder feedback.

As always we encourage you to do your part- stay home when you’re sick, practice physical distancing, and wash your wands regularly.  CCI-LEX is here if you need any help or supports.

May 19, 2020 – COVID-19 Updates and Online Learning.

At this time, CCI-LEX continues to deliver all ESL classes online and will continue online delivery for the summer.

CCI-LEX remains closed and there are currently no face-to-face classes.  No decisions have been made about when we will re-open the school.  We continue to monitor all updates and guidance from our Government and Health Authorities, and are watching closely as the province slowly reopens.  The safety of our students, staff, volunteers and community is of utmost importance.

Usually at this time, we would be planning for our June Annual General Meeting to reflect on the past year and celebrate our students’ successes.  However, with safety the utmost priority, we will be delaying our meeting and looking to host a virtual AGM at a later date.  We will look forward to convening our members to provide updates and share our thoughts for the road ahead.  Stay tuned for details.

Classes for both CCI and LEX programs are being delivered online via Zoom and we regularly post learning activities on the Student Life, Student Learning section of our website.  We want to support as many newcomers as possible to continue their English language studies during this challenging time!

Currently, we are in the process of training volunteers so we can offer more levels and times for General ESL classes in the LEX Program from June.  We plan to continue the LEX Program through the summer months.

From June 1, The CCI Program will be starting a brand new term for General ESL, Communication Skills, and Read and Write for Success classes.  We are pleased to offer a deeply discounted price for the summer term, as well as highly competitive rates for one-on-one tutoring with certified TESL instructors.

In a restricted economic environment, enhanced English language skills, community connections, and personal networks become even more important for newcomers to Canada.   And these are all things CCI-LEX commits to fostering whether it is in an online environment or in the classroom.

Check our website and CCI-LEX Facebook Page for regular updates about classes and office hours.

Please stay safe – practice social distancing, and wash your wands regularly – and be sure to take care of both your physical and mental health.  Contact us if you need any help or supports.

April 15, 2020 – COVID-19 Updates and Online Learning

CCI-LEX continues to monitor the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on a regular basis.  The safety of our students, staff, volunteers and community is of utmost importance, and we are following the recommendations and guidance of our government and health authorities.

As difficult as this is, it means that there are no face-to-face classes at CCI-LEX at this time.  However, even though the school is closed to the public, we are working hard to offer English learning opportunities and activities for our students!

We are starting to move classes online via Zoom in both our CCI and LEX Programs.  Current students are joining online classes now, and we hope to welcome new students to our online programs in the near future.

Also, we have created a new section on our website with free learning activities and links to resources to help students practice their English while they are at home!  Check out the Student Learning section of our website.  New activities will be added every week.

A big thank you to our dedicated staff, teachers, and volunteers that continue to support CCI-LEX and are working hard to transition our classes and activities to this new online format.  If you are interested in volunteering to create online learning activities or teach online classes, please contact us!

Also, a big thank you to all of our students for their patience and flexibility during this difficult time and for your willingness to learn online!

Check our website and CCI-LEX Facebook Page for regular updates about classes and office hours.

In the meantime, please stay safe and healthy.  I wish you and your families all the best.  We hope to talk to you soon!

Sincerely,

Anne-Marie Kallal
